School Sizes
One of the questions potential customers ask us about is our average school size. If they are a larger school they want to know if our software will handle the data traffic and if they are smaller they want to know if schools their size use the software and can afford it.

One of our schools recently asked for an addition to a report, they wanted a table added that would show the number of work orders and the number of days since submission (like you have on an invoice showing 30 days, 90 days, etc.) After we finished the report modification, I ran the report for our largest school and for one of our smallest.
Smaller School:

Department Efficiency Report: 1/1/2007 - 4/24/2007
Work Orders Submitted: 34
Submitted Work Orders Completed: 19
Total Work Orders Completed: 34
Submitted Orders Cancelled: 1
Submitted Work Orders Left Open: 14
Average Completion Time: 20 days, 2 hours, and 43 minutes
Adjusted Average Completion Time: 22 days, 20 hours, and 23 minutes

Submitted Work Orders Left Open - Days Since Submission
0-30 Days 31-60 Days 61-90 Days 91-120 Days 120+ Days Total
14 0 0 0 0 14

Larger School:

Department Efficiency Report: 1/1/2007 - 4/24/2007
Work Orders Submitted: 6082
Submitted Work Orders Completed: 5045
Total Work Orders Completed: 6597
Submitted Orders Cancelled: 208
Submitted Work Orders Left Open: 829
Average Completion Time: 10 days, 21 hours, and 42 minutes
Adjusted Average Completion Time: 13 days, 2 hours, and 42 minutes

Submitted Work Orders Left Open - Days Since Submission
0-30 Days 31-60 Days 61-90 Days 91-120 Days 120+ Days Total
760 50 18 1 0 829

That was for the year to date as of today. The large school and small schools are both loyal customers and both talk about the money and time the systems save them even though they are very different in size. The difference in size between these two customers is pretty amazing when you look at the data, but the systems accomplish the same things for both. As programmers say, the system scales.

I just thought that was interesting. Also, if you look at the blog archives, you'll see I could probably win an award for least frequent blogger in a software category. As always, I'll try to do better.

UPDATE: Looking over this entry, I can see the average completion time of the smaller school is a little long. What's up with that! I'm going to email the coordinator and bug him about this. 20 Days!?! Come on, (name deleted)!
